BELAGA: Suziana Sampang was overjoyed after she was crowned as the ‘Daven Kayan Unak’ winner for the adult category at the Belaga District level ‘Pesta Do Ledoh 2024’.
The ‘Daven Kayan Unak’ is a fashion show consisting of three categories – adult, veteran and children, which displays elements of traditional clothing of the past and include originality and the authenticity of the Kayan costume.
Suziana told New Sarawak Tribune that it was her first time winning a fashion show competition.
The 30-year-old Kayan and Iban mix expressed deep gratitude and pride in wearing traditional costumes that beautifully represent the rich heritage of the Kayan ethnic group.
“There are unique elements to this Kayan costume, for example this songket cloth, which was worn by ladies in the past,” she said.
Suziana, a mother of two and also a housewife, has spent about a month preparing for the competition and mentioned that the clothes and costumes she wore were predominantly handmade, with some items being hand-me-downs from the past.
She said this blend of handmade and inherited pieces adds a unique and original touch to her costume, reflecting both her personal craftsmanship and a connection to tradition.
“I did not expect to win this competition because everyone else did so well so I did not expect it.
“I have been residing in Belaga for over 10 years, my husband is also from Uma Kahei longhouse,” Suziana added.
She also won the ‘ngajat duet’ competition with her dance partner Huvat Senun in conjunction with the ‘Pesta Do Ledoh’ that was held on July 5 and 6 at the Uma Kahei longhouse in Belaga.
In other categories, Evan Usat won the men’s veteran category of the ‘Daven Kayan Unak’ competition, Ping Avit won the women’s category, Calvet Usat won the boys’ category, and Hayati Ping won the girls’ category.
The winners received a hamper and a trophy.
Additionally, Hubong Usat Balan was awarded best dressed among women, and Kanyan William received the best dressed award for men.
