KUCHING: The newest academic course – Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering (Honours) at Curtin University Malaysia in Miri, will welcome its first cohort of about 50 students this year.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the newly introduced course may well be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and potentially in the whole of Asia.
“This year will be the first intake involving up to 50 students, all of whom are Sarawakians.
“This course will cover eight or nine types of energy, tailored to meet the growing demands of the energy sector in Malaysia and globally.
“It will take about four years to complete the course,” he said during a ‘Juh Randau’ interview with Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) recently.
On Feb 19 this year, Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig said the course is designed to establish Curtin as a recognised global leader in research, education and engagement for energy and resources transition, with focus on stewardship of air, water and land.
This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 goals, particularly in energy transition and renewable energy
“Upon completing the course, graduates will be ready to drive forward Energy in Transition technologies globally.
“The pioneering four-year course, uniquely focused on the Energy in Transition movement and having a robust curriculum, is well-equipped to prepare students for crucial roles in shaping a sustainable future.
“Students will start with a strong foundation in fundamental engineering concepts during their first year (Engineering Foundation Year), followed by a comprehensive study of various aspects of energy engineering,” Leunig said.
As they progress, they will have options to choose various specialisations, including Energy Conversion Technologies, Low Carbon Transition, Subsurface Energy Engineering, and Power Systems Engineering, and others.
In their final year, students will undertake a major research project and a team capstone design project.
Graduates can look forward to careers as energy systems engineers, energy transition consultants, subsurface energy engineers, energy researchers, energy conversion consultants, researchers and academics in relevant fields, and more.
