Kelantan target 20 gold medals at Sarawak SUKMA

KOTA BHARU: Kelantan are targeting a total of 56 medals at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) scheduled to be held in Sarawak  from Aug 17 to 24.

State Youth, Sports, NGOs and Community Unity Committee chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad said that they aim secure 20 gold, 10 silver and 26 bronze medals.

He said that Kelantan will be sending 400 athletes to participate in 30 events at the Sarawak SUKMA.

“Currently, the state athletes are in the final stages of preparation at their respective training centres, clubs, or associations, and they will undergo centralised training in mid-July to strategise for their competitions,” he told Bernama yesterday.

He added that incentives for medal winners would be announced soon.

The SUKMA, incepted in 1986, was hosted by Sarawak in 1990 and 2016 and emerged as overall champions in three consecutive editions – 1990, 1992 and 1994.

The coming SUKMA will see 12,619 athletes and officials participating in 37 sports involving venues in nine divisions namely Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri .

The 21st edition of the Games will also be the largest ever with 488 events hosted, 236 events for men, 217 events for women while 35 others are mixed participation events. – BERNAMA
