KUCHING: Ecotourism has been identified as a key economic driver for Kampung Sungai Aur and Kampung Sibu Laut, said Datuk Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

The Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications (Utilities) noted that both villages boast rich natural beauty, flora, and fauna, making them unique destinations for ecotourism.

He added that the villages have been working with tourism agencies to expand these activities, with Kampung Sibu Laut recently being recognised as part of the Sarawak Delta Geopark.

“It is important to retain and revitalise the rural communities. I call on village leaders and committees to encourage second and third-generation families, who have moved to urban areas like Kuching and Telaga Air, to return and develop their ancestral homes,” he said after attending the handover of completed concrete road projects in both villages.

He explained that in 1982, the Sarawak government initiated the Rural Growth Centre (RGC) programme, aimed at providing essential amenities to scattered village populations.

“Kampung Sungai Aur and Kampung Sibu Laut were among the first to be identified for development under this programme and have seen sustained efforts to improve infrastructure despite logistical challenges.

“By enhancing basic amenities and communal activities, the government aim to increase the resident population and community engagement,” he said.

Looking ahead, he assured that the Rural Transformation programme (RTP) would continue to address the evolving needs of these rural communities.

He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government, local leaders, and the community to ensure infrastructure development will be realised in the area.
