KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to three months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday (July 11) for stealing six gas cylinders from a self-service laundry shop last June.

Mohd Zulfitri Serah, 31, from Kampung Goebilt, pleaded guilty to a charge read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.

He was accused under Section 380 of the Penal Code for stealing six gas cylinders belonging to a self-service laundry service company in Demak Laut around 12.46pm on June 26.

If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison and fined or caned.

According to the case facts, the complainant, the owner of the laundry shop, discovered that six Petronas brand gas cylinders had been stolen by the accused, a former employee, based on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.

The estimated loss incurred by the complainant totalled RM1,320.00. A police report was lodged by the complainant for further action and investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused on July 7.

The case was prosecuted by prosecuting officer, Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
