SIBU: Programmes that engage the community with Sarawak Day should be organised more frequently and annually to enhance people’s understanding of Sarawak’s history, says Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
Alluding to the 722 Run For Sarawak organised by Seberkas Pelawan, the Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said the event is not only a physical activity but also deeply meaningful.
“Through the run, we can bring together everyone from all parts of the community to demonstrate our unity and strong support for a harmonious Sarawak community, regardless of our cultural or religious backgrounds,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the programme, which gathered over 800 participants at Tun Zaidi Adruce Stadium today (July 21).
Tiang added that such programmes should be promoted as they provide an opportunity to remind and educate Sarawakians about their history and the special rights they enjoy within the Federation of Malaysia.
“We can explain to our fellow Sarawakians why we gained self-governance on July 22, 1963, due to our historical roots as an independent nation since 1841. All these aspects are part of our history.
“And under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Sarawak government is making strategic moves utilising our natural resources and autonomous powers,” he added.
He stressed that the initiatives by the Sarawak government, through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), are fully utilised for the benefit and interest of Sarawakians.
“So when we celebrate 722, all these aspects will be explained. People will start asking questions and learning about it. Therefore, I believe it is a very important day for all Sarawakians,” he said.
