SIBU: A two-storey student dormitory at SMK Song 1 here, was partially destroyed in an afternoon fire yesterday (July 21).

No injuries or casualties were reported in the 4.15pm incident. Four dormitory wardens and two students were in the building at the time and managed to evacuate to safety.

Firefighters from Song station were promptly dispatched to the scene, about 2km, after receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, they found the upper floor of the dormitory engulfed in flames, and the extinguishing deed was performed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

The flames, which caused 60 per cent damage, were brought under control by 5.05pm, followed by overhaul works to ensure there was no risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 6.26pm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
