BINTULU: Sarawak’s first state-of-the-art methanol complex at Tanjung Kidurong is a testament to “Sarawak’s legacy realised,” according to Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain.
The Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd chairman highlighted that the complex showcases innovative technologies, including large-scale modular construction and jetty wave screen technology, a first of its kind in Malaysia.
“Capable of producing 1.75 million metric tons of methanol annually, this complex stands as one of the largest in the region, representing a major investment in Sarawak’s future,” he said during the launching ceremony today (July 22).
Delving into the project’s inception, he explained that the goal was to create a sustainable and impactful project serving as a foundation for developing value-added oil and gas downstream business activities.
“The project began with a vision – an aspiration to build a legacy for the people of Sarawak. When we embarked on this methanol plant project, we knew we were not merely constructing a facility; we were laying the foundation for technological and industrial advancement for future generations.
“The complex reflects a strong commitment to sustainability, with advanced technologies incorporated to minimise environmental impact, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and optimise energy use.
“These measures ensure that plant operations align with global standards for environmental stewardship,” he added.
Looking ahead, Sarawak Petchem is exploring further opportunities to diversify its portfolio and promote green energy adoption.
One major project in their development and growth strategy is the Low Carbon Ammonia and Urea Plant project, which aims to drive their sustainable goals and further strengthen Sarawak’s position in the regional petrochemical industry.
The launch earlier also featured the exchange of documents between Sarawak Petchem and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) regarding the supply of natural gas to the methanol complex and the development of the upcoming Low Carbon Ammonia and Urea Plant Project.
This was witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Additionally, Sarawak Petchem formalised its collaboration on renewable energy with Centre For Technology Excellence Sarawak Sdn Bhd (CENTEXS) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
Other documents, including operational licences and agreements with relevant authorities were also exchanged.
Abang Johari also presented the appreciation awards to six companies that participated in the Sarawak Methanol Plant Project namely Samsung E&A, China Communications Construction Company (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Rahabco Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd, See Energy Sdn Bhd, WZS MisiSetia Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Caya Daya Sdn Bhd.
