KUCHING: An escalator safety campaign has been launched to enhance public safety when riding escalators.
The Sarawak Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) initiative was launched in collaboration with Elebest Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and Vivacity Megamall, on Wednesday (July 24).
The event, officiated by DOSH Deputy Director (Technical Services) Azman Ahmad, aims to raise awareness about the importance of using escalators safely.
Azman said it aligns with the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Week 2024, a state-level initiative dedicated to promoting workplace safety and health.
“The event underscores the critical need for escalator safety in public spaces, particularly in bustling shopping malls like Vivacity Megamall.
“The significance of safety in everyday life and the necessity of vigilance while using escalators is important. This initiative is vital to achieving safety goals in public spaces.
“Safety is a collective responsibility, with proper awareness and adherence to safety guidelines, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the well-being of all escalator users,” he added.
He also gave details about the recent statewide Backlog Operation, which ran from April 22 to 24.
In this operation 43 officers inspected 174 workplaces across Sarawak, resulting in 172 notices and 167 directives being issued, with 83 machines seized for non-compliance.
Azman urged all premises to appoint certified maintenance companies to ensure escalators are regularly serviced and safe for use.
He expressed hope that the campaign would have a lasting positive impact on public safety and compliance with relevant laws.
