MIRI: The city is set to replace its aging urban bus fleet with new Volvo smart buses from Sweden soon.
These buses, each with a capacity of 55 passengers, are expected to improve public transportation in the city.
State Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said this during the Miri Urban Transport Action Plan stakeholder workshop today.
Organised by Curtin Biovalley Sdn Bhd in collaboration with Perunding Amal Teknik Sdn Bhd, the workshop outlined the transport improvements slated for Miri.
“A total of 14 urban buses from Sweden will arrive in Miri by the end of September, with an official launch scheduled for October,” Lee stated.
“The current fleet, some of which are over 20 years old, are in poor condition.
“Passengers have complained about the old buses, citing issues such as malfunctioning air conditioning and general discomfort.”
Lee said the ministry proposed replacing these old buses with new smart buses, and finally received approval under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
Addressing concerns about traffic congestion, he emphasised the need for technology to ensure efficient bus operations.
“Currently, our buses operate like ordinary vehicles on the road, leading to delays. To counter this, we propose implementing signal priority for our buses, similar to the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.
“This technology ensures traffic lights turn green for buses approaching intersections, allowing them to travel without stopping at red lights,” Lee explained.
The workshop also aimed to formulate strategies for enhancing Miri’s urban transportation system through 2035.
“We aim to improve mobility, reduce congestion, enhance safety, and promote sustainable transportation options. This forward-thinking strategy will focus on integrating public transportation, cycling, walking, and modern infrastructure to ensure mobility and accessibility for all,” Lee noted.
