By Maya Green
Beware the first lie
For it bites the sharpest
It creeps in unnoticed
Almost innocently
The victim is an easy prey
Unaware and absent mindedly
Targeted by a straight arrow
When all guards are down
Often in a beautiful setting
When none will notice
Beware the subtle guile
Of the ancient forked tongue
Beware the effect
Of that very first lie
She will be the grandmother
The beginning of the next one
A lie upon a lie
To cover up the first lie
In a downward spiral
Of a lie upon a lie
And so on down the line, ad infinitum >
So better to own up
To confess and to repent
To break up the chain
Of a spiralling storm
To be whole again
To be free from the chains
And the shackling choke
Of lies upon lies
So the earlier the better,
To own up, and to break the spell
To call the lie of the lie
And to walk back into the sunshine
