KUCHING: Adorned with a scout scarf, the cat monument in Padungan is set to celebrate World Scout Scarf Day.

Gracing the ceremony today (Aug 1) is Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who said the ceremony symbolises the values of loyalty, service, and camaraderie central to the scout ethos.

“Celebrated every Aug 1,this event holds significant meaning for scouts worldwide and is a highlight in the scouting community’s calendar in Sarawak.

“The ceremony symbolises unity and the enduring spirit of the scout movement, bringing together scouts from various backgrounds and affiliations.”

He  expressed his admiration for the scouts’ dedication to community service and leadership development. He highlighted the importance of such events in fostering a sense of belonging and continuity among the younger generation.

He also noted that since the event coincides with the Kuching City Day celebration, scouts are invited to organise activities in collaboration with Kuching South City to create a more significant impact on the city day celebration.

Additionally, he called upon the scouts to don the scarf on the cat monument every Aug 1 by making an official request early to the council.

“World Scout Scarf Day is not just a celebration; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to the principles of scouting.

It reminds us of the global brotherhood that transcends borders and cultures, united under the common values of the scout law and promise.”

The event was attended by scouts, leaders, and members of the public, all donning their scarves as a symbol of their scouting identity. The ceremony included a moment of silence and reflection, paying tribute to the founders of the scouting movement and celebrating the achievements of scouts worldwide.

The scarf-wearing ceremony at the cat monument for the first time is set to become a unique tradition in Kuching, reflecting the city’s pride in its scouting heritage. It serves as a reminder of the positive impact scouting has on young people, encouraging them to be responsible, active citizens.
