KUCHING: Attracted by the promise of substantial profits and love, a woman in her 40s from Padawan was duped out of her savings of RM250,000.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the case was an online investment fraud involving a female victim who received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number in mid-May 2024.
“The suspect, identifying himself as Chin Hao @ Evan, developed an online romantic relationship with the victim and expressed his intention to marry her.
“Later in early June 2024, the suspect offered an investment opportunity through the J.P. Morgan application, promising a 5 per cent return on investment,” he said.
The victim was instructed to purchase shares by transferring money to bank accounts provided by the suspect. Subsequently, she made 23 transactions to eight different bank accounts between early June and July 2024, totalling RM250,000.
Realising she had been deceived after not receiving any promised returns, the victim lodged a police report.
Mancha urged the public to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities before committing any funds.
