KUCHING: The government and opposition must first agree on a framework for good governance before any decision is made on allocating funds to opposition MPs, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He said that cooperation between the two sides is crucial for nation-building and fostering national unity.
The draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the matter has been sent to Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, and its details will be made public next week, he added.
“The priority is to establish a common ground for cooperation in good governance to strengthen national unity and integration,” Fadillah told reporters after officiating the Flying the Jalur Gemilang ceremony at the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Convention Centre today (Aug 3).
“Once we have a shared understanding of the framework, we can then discuss allocations. If negotiations are necessary, a government committee will be formed to engage with an opposition committee,” he said.
Fadillah had previously announced the finalisation of the draft MoU and its submission to Takiyuddin. The proposed next step is a joint committee meeting between the government and opposition.
This development comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged for a swift resolution to the issue.
