KUCHING: The monthly raising ceremony of Ibu Pertiwi plays a pivotal role in fostering patriotism within the community, serving as a symbol of loyalty and pride in Sarawak’s achievements.

Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the ceremony aims to involve the local community, including leaders, residents and their families, to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the state.

“The inaugural flag raising ceremony was officiated by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on July 28, and today (Aug 4) marks the second ceremony and we have decided that the raising of Ibu Pertiwi will be held on the first Sunday of every month,” he said at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi where the ceremony took place.

He added that the event symbolises the pride of Sarawakians in the prosperity and advancements made under the leadership of the Premier in making Sarawak a developed region in Malaysia by 2030.

“Ibu Pertiwi is a symbol of pride for us. We commemorate Sarawak Day on July 22, National Day on August 31, and Malaysia Day on September 16.

“These celebrations are crucial for encouraging citizens to express their loyalty and pride in our nation,” he said.

He also said that residents of all ages would be invited to the flag-raising ceremonies in future to strengthen the patriotic spirit especially among the younger generation and the broader community.

Kuching North City mayor Hilmy Othman, who was present at the event, said the flag raising ceremony was designed to include everyone, with special emphasis on children and school students as we want to provide opportunities for young people to participate and learn about the significance of the Ibu Pertiwi and enhance their spirit of patriotism.

The mayor expressed gratitude to the state government for supporting the initiative and highlighted that naming the square Dataran Ibu Pertiwi has inspired efforts to enhance the waterfront area.
