KUCHING: The Advanced Sustainable Technology International Conference (ASTECH 2024) programme aims to promote lifelong learning by providing professional development and skill enhancement opportunities for both graduates and instructors, said Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

The Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak stressed the importance of continuous learning in a rapidly evolving job market, both in Malaysia and globally.

He said cultivating a highly skilled workforce is crucial for adapting to these changes.

“Aligned with the conference theme, the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) will use ASTECH 2024 to advance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by sharing best practices and innovative ideas.

“This conference supports talent development, offers valuable opportunities for students and educators, and fosters international collaboration,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony at  the Waterfront Hotel, here today.

Sagah noted that the conference is unique as it integrates a diverse range of components, including a student town hall, an industrial exhibition, an international forum, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities.

“The core of ASTECH lies in uniting all essential entities to collaborate in developing a highly skilled workforce for a sustainable economy,” he added.

In the context of TVET, sustainability involves integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into skill development. This approach equips individuals with relevant skills while also promoting practices that contribute to a sustainable future.

Expressing confidence that continuous improvement and innovation facilitated by a platform like ASTECH will drive polytechnics and other skill-based institutions to consistently enhance their training methods and facilities.

“By integrating the innovative ideas presented at ASTECH into polytechnic education, we can significantly boost the relevance, appeal, and impact of these institutions on both students and the wider community,” he said

He went on to call for synergised efforts among stakeholders to develop high-income economies for Sarawak and Malaysia, emphasising the importance of equipping future talent with advanced skills and knowledge to meet the demands of emerging job markets across various sectors.
