KUCHING: The Malaysian government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is committed to ensuring seamless internet access during the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma), which will take place from Aug 17 to 24.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said it is crucial to ensure all broadcasting, information dissemination, and live coverage of the event proceed smoothly without any interruptions.

“I hope that the Sukma games, which will kick off next week, proceed without any hitches, and the Sarawak MCMC will ensure uninterrupted internet access.

“If any Internet issues arise, you can contact the director, Adiman Ajem. I will provide his phone number,” he quipped.

Fahmi made these remarks during the Ministry of Communication (Sarawak Zone) Excellent Service Awards 2023 at the P. Ramlee Auditorium, RTM Kuching today (Aug 8).

On the same note, he urged those in the Ministry of Communications to work diligently during the Sukma event to ensure that broadcasting, live coverage, and information dissemination reach every part of Sarawak.

Earlier in May, he announced that ‘5G Advanced’, also known as 5.5G, would be utilised for live broadcasts of Sukma this month to enhance live streaming capabilities through this technology.

However, he noted that this is a pilot project and will only be used in Kuching as a Proof of Concept (POC) by RTM due to its new and not yet widely adopted nature.

The difference between 5G Advanced and 5G is that while 5G can achieve speeds of up to 1 Gbps with 1000 Mbps, 5G Advanced can reach speeds of up to 8 Gbps, which is eight times faster.

On another note, MCMC has received applications from several telco companies interested in partnering with RTM to stream or broadcast Sukma using 5G Advanced or 5.5G.
