MIRI: The Sarawak contingent is setting its sights on a target of securing at least 70 gold medals in the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024, aiming to emerge as the overall champion.
This goal was announced by Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, who also serves as the Chef de Mission (CDM) for the Sarawak contingent.
Rentap expressed confidence in the continent’s ability to achieve this target, noting that the preparations for the games have been going smoothly, especially in Miri, one of the key organising centres for the event.
He conducted a venue inspection yesterday and was satisfied with the progress.
“We are definitely ready to contribute gold medals to the Sarawak contingent. I am confident that with the preparation and the athletes’ training, we will achieve our target,” said Rentap during a press conference after visiting the SUKMA venues.
However, he also acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly the intense competition that Sarawak athletes will face in the final stages of the tournament.
“The athletes will face stiff competition, especially at the final stage of the competition,” he added.
The events in Miri include silat at the Indoor Stadium, rugby at Miri Stadium, softball at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Merbau, karate at the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) Multipurpose Hall, fencing at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club and sailing at Marina Bay.
These events are expected to be significant contributors to Sarawak’s medal haul.
In addition to the sporting preparations, Rentap assured that safety during the games is a top priority.
A committee under the Resident’s Office, with support from the police force, has been established to oversee security-related matters.
“I will be meeting with all the residents involved to get feedback. This is because I want to ensure the safety of not only Sarawak’s athletes but also those coming from outside,” he said.
