KUCHING: A gold medal is the ultimate target for Sarawak’s Kabaddi team as they compete on home soil at the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
The state’s Kabaddi association president ASP Muttiah Pillai believes home advantage will be crucial in the team’s quest for gold.
“This is a golden opportunity for Sarawak,” he said.
“We are well-prepared and aiming for our first-ever gold medal.”
Muttiah emphasised the importance of strong local support, particularly from the Lundu community, where the Kabaddi event will be held from August 20 to 23.
“Lundu is our home ground, and we want to showcase the spirit of Sarawak,” he added.
Despite the optimism, the team manager cautioned against underestimating their opponents.
“This is our battleground, and we will fight hard,” he said.
Head coach Ganisan Punisamy, who oversaw intensive training sessions, including a stint in Thailand, is confident of the team’s chances.
“The boys can reach the semi-finals, while the girls are targeting at least a silver medal,” he said.
Sarawak’s women’s team will compete against Federal Territories, Kedah, Selangor, Pulau Pinang, Perak, and Terengganu in Group A. The men’s team faces Selangor, Terengganu, Melaka, and Perlis in Group A.
