KOTA SAMARAHAN: The World Tapas Competition was organised for the very first time in Sarawak.

According to Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, the one-day event started on today (August 12) with 27 chefs from various ethnic groups.

“Five of the best participants will be selected to present their products ahead of the world championship,” he said.

He added that tapas food culture is the essence of Spanish cuisine and an integral aspect of local food culture.

“Only the winners of today’s event will have the opportunity to represent Sarawak and fly to Spain to participate in related events,” he added.

Ting was prompted to participate in the event’s promotion and mentioned that the ministry supports anything useful to the growth of tourism activities in Sarawak, including cuisine culture, which is part of the tourism industry.

He said this when met by reporters after completing the tournament at La Promenade here.

He praised the organisers for choosing Sarawak as the host for this event, emphasising that Sarawak is a place rich in ethnic groups and various gastronomic traditions, which will undoubtedly add to the event’s appeal.

In the same development, Ting insisted that the tournament can be the best platform for the young generation in Sarawak who are interested in the field of cooking to venture into the field more deeply.

“There are also youth participants from Sri Aman, Miri and Kuching, there is no doubt that this programme can provide valuable experience for them.”

Ethos Connect International Consulting and E-Spain are organising the event, which is supported by the Spanish Local Council and the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts. Nestlé and F&N are other sponsors, while La Promenade Mall provides the venue.
