SIBU: The 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) badminton event, which will start tomorrow (Saturday, Aug 17), marks a moment of truth for the Sarawak squad.
According to head coach Azrihanif Azahar, they have been building up over the past year and a half, and in the final two months, he believes all the players have prepared to the best of their abilities.
“Our expectations are neither too high nor too low. We are aiming for gold, though it is uncertain, but we will try our best.
“So, starting tomorrow, it’s the moment of truth for what we’ve prepared. We will perform tomorrow and in the coming days. Hopefully, there will be some miracles and luck to secure wins,” he said when met by reporters on Friday (Aug 16).
Meanwhile, when asked about Sarawak’s badminton players, he said the squad has five national players—two from the National Senior Squad and three from the Junior Squad.
He added that some of the team he deems as strong contenders include Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang.
“The others are strong too, but they’re not as balanced. Each event has its own athletes with their own strengths. So, in my view, the three states I mentioned are well-balanced. From men’s singles and women’s singles to mixed doubles, all are strong.
“They have national players, state players, and established players. So, everyone has a fair chance,” he added.
Azrihanif also extended his gratitude to the Sarawak government for their support in ensuring the success of Sarawak’s badminton team.
“A huge thank you to the Sarawak Sports Council, the Sarawak Leaders Unit, Press Metal, and all the staff who have been incredibly helpful,” he added.
