MIRI: Sarawak’s hopes of securing a medal in the female Kata individual category at the ongoing karate championships were dashed today (Aug 17) as Annabelle Ping Balan narrowly missed out on bronze.

The 19-year-old Kenyah from Marudi, representing Sarawak, had shown early promise but was defeated by Brunei’s Farhah Syahirah Mohamad Shamrin, who scored 37.9 points to advance to the final.

In the bronze medal match, Annabelle faced off against Penang’s Ph Ng Lebin. Despite a valiant effort, she fell short with a score of 37.0 points, compared to Lebin’s 38.9.

The intense first day of competition took place at the Miri Industrial Training Institute (IKBN).

Brunei’s Farhah, who had earlier defeated Annabelle, will now contend for gold against Sabah’s Lovelly Anne Robberth.

The male and female Kata individual categories are part of the ongoing tournament, which has attracted top karatekas from various regions.

While Annabelle’s medal hopes were dashed, her participation has been a source of pride for Sarawak, particularly her hometown of Marudi.
