SIBU: Sarawak’s dream of winning team gold in badminton was crushed by Selangor after they lost 3-0 on Monday (Aug 19).

The semi-final match saw Sarawak’s women’s singles player, Megan Tan Zhi Yi, losing to Selangor’s Letshanaa Karupathevan.

As expected, Letshanaa, a national player and ranked 59th in the women’s world rankings, had an easy win against Megan with scores of 21-3 and 21-13.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, Sarawak’s Goh Shun Huat was beaten by Selangor’s Chua Kim Sheng.

Shun Huat claimed the first set 22-20, but Kim Sheng fought hard to push the match into a rubber set by scoring 21-14.

In the third set, Kim Sheng defeated Shun Huat 21-15.

In the mixed doubles, Sarawak’s Jeremy Juan Zhen Liang-Kashley Khi Tze Yin lost to Selangor’s Wong Vin Sean-Ho Lo Ee in the first set 21-13.

The Selangor duo then crushed Sarawak’s hopes of bringing the fight to the rubber game, putting a full stop to Sarawak’s hopes of getting a gold or silver medal in the group stage.

On Tuesday (Aug 20), Sarawak will play Penang for the bronze medal, while Selangor will face the Federal Territories for the gold medal.
