KUCHING: Maple Law Tsi Eun, the 18-year-old from Sibu, achieved an unexpected silver medal in the women bantamweight (under 53kg) final at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI).

Despite being surprised by her advancement to the semi-finals, Maple was pleased with her performance but acknowledged areas for improvement.

I was not even expect myself to advanced to final because it was a long day for all of us. During the final, I was actually very close to getting the gold medal.

However, due to my stamina, I was not able to get the gold. And it is something that I have to improve from time to time,・ she said after receiving her medal at Stadium Perpaduan here on Tuesday (Aug 20).

Maple also shared her plans for the future, including pursuing further studies in Business in Kuching and competing in the next Sukma.

“I am also very thankful for my family, specifically my parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles whom came all the way from Sibu, watching me compete until 12am.

“This medal I dedicate to my mum and dad, because without their support I would not be here,” she added.

In the men’s bantamweight (under 53kg) category, 17-year-old bronze medallist Allexandre Axcelle Juntan faced challenges in his semi-final match.

He was distracted by his opponent, Fu Ceen Put Thai’s “drop kick,” which gave the Terengganu competitor an advantage.

“And that was the reason why I did not manage to get into the semi-final last night (Monday, Aug 19),” he said.

Looking ahead, Allexandre is determined to improve and aims to secure a gold medal in future competitions.

“I will keep training, especially for the next Sukma, and I hope I would eventually get the gold medal.”
