KUCHING: Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah paid a courtesy visit to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Wednesday (Aug 21).
The visit was intended to express his gratitude to Abang Johari for his support and nomination, which led to his appointment as the 21st President of Dewan Negara, replacing the late Datuk Mutang Tagal, who passed away on May 10.
Speaking to reporters after the courtesy visit, he also expressed his appreciation to His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, for consenting to his appointment.
According to him, the same gratitude was also extended to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who had submitted his name as a candidate to be elected at the Second Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament.
“This is recognition and honour for Sarawak and the leadership of Premier Abang Johari,” he said.
On July 15, Awang Bemee took his oath of office before the Deputy President of the Dewan Negara, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, following the consent of His Majesty for a term of three years until July 14, 2027.
