KUCHING: Sarawak’s archers clinched another gold medal in the men’s recurve team category at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).

The team, comprising Isaac Ann Zhe Ting, Liew Yu Jie, and Melvin Tieh Xuan Ruey, faced a closely contested final against Pahang at the Petra Jaya Archery Range today (Aug 23).

Sarawak started strong, leading the first set with 51 points, while Pahang trailed with 45. The momentum continued in the second set, with Sarawak securing 50 points to Pahang’s 47.

Pahang made an effort to extend the match to a fourth set, but the third set ended in a 49-49 draw, securing Sarawak’s victory and the championship title.

Meanwhile, Johor claimed the bronze medal by defeating the Federal Territories, 5-3.

Sarawak head coach Jeffery Low Wei Loon expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in the final.

He acknowledged that while the team had a somewhat shaky start earlier in the tournament, he never lost faith in the trio.

“If you look at their performance, they could have delivered a better performance or, in other words, set a new Sukma record.

“But they have always been on our radar to secure a victory, and I am grateful that they proved their capabilities in the final match,” he told reporters.

Low added that the team’s momentum grew stronger after they took the lead in the first set.

When asked if there was a secret to their success, Low credited the athletes’ strong determination and the support of fans who were present during the final.

“During the matches, I didn’t make many corrections, just reiterated what I always tell them during training.

“The important thing is I did not undermine them, and I reminded the athletes that they need to show their true character, and that would be enough,” he said.

The squad concluded the archery event by contributing a total of two gold and two bronze medals.
