KUCHING: The use of modern technology and drones in the opening ceremony of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has dispelled the perception of Sarawak as a state still living in primitive conditions.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the opening night of the Games at the Sarawak Stadium was a proud achievement for the state, showcasing its progress to the entire nation.
“As you know, when we officiated at the opening of our SUKMA, we programmed the drones and it was successful.
“Drones were ascending and forming words in the sky above the stadium. The crowd was amazed.
“This is technology and in SUKMA, we used technology, and we are very proud. We’ve shown to all Malaysians that Sarawak is no longer ‘atas pokok’ (living on tops of trees),” he said.
He said this during Sarawak Skills’ 30th anniversary gala dinner at Riverside Majestic Hotel here last night (Aug 23).
On a related note, he said the state has achieved the target of achieving 70 gold medals in the Games.
“Tonight, we got 71 gold (medals). One extra gold (than our target). Even though the Federal Territories are catching up, but at least we met our target.
“Whether or not we become the overall champion, at least we have achieved 71 gold medals,” he said.
At the time of writing, Sarawak continues to lead the medal tally with 72 golds, 52 silvers, and 66 bronzes.
SUKMA, set to conclude on Saturday (Aug 24), sees the Federal Territories trailing behind with 69 golds, 62 silvers, and 68 bronzes.
