Consulate leaves missing Indonesian case to police

KUCHING: The Indonesian Consulate General here has handed over the case of its countryman feared missing after an alleged mining incident in Bau to the police for further investigation.

It is understood that Yoga Anggiska 26, allegedly went missing during an illegal mining activity in a restricted area on Aug 13.

His disappearance was reported to his family in Sumatra by his friends. The alleged incident has also since gone viral on social media.

According to Consul General Raden Sigit Witjaksono, it also received attention from his side.

“The consulate lodged a report with Bau district police headquarters (IPD) on Aug 24. We handed over the case to them for further investigation purposes.

“We have been in contact with the investigating officer for updates on the case.

“We hope for a quick resolution that will provide closure to his family, who travelled all the way from Jambi, Sumatra. We will closely monitor this,” he said when met by Sarawak Tribune and its sister paper, Suara Sarawak, at his office Tuesday morning (Aug 27).

Raden added that the consulate will assist the investigation and provide any necessary statements from the family or his friends to the police.

In light of this, he also reminded Indonesians working in or intending to work in Malaysia to ensure they have proper documentation to facilitate their affairs here.

“Documents such as passports, permission to work and stay in the country are important in the event of an emergency like this.

“With the documents, it will facilitate the investigation process, including insurance protection,” he said.

Sarawak Tribune reached out to Bau police chief DSP Jawai Francis who said the case has been classified as a missing person.

“I can confirm that we have received the report from the consulate and investigations are still ongoing.

“We are currently looking for witnesses who are able to identify the location of the alleged incident,” she said over the phone on Tuesday.
