KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here fined a man RM2,000, in default four months in prison, for damaging Telekom’s copper and fibre cables, resulting in network disruption.
Hairman, 40, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi to the charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to prison for a term of up to two years, or fined, or both.
He and an accomplice, who is still at large, are accused of damaging the telecommunication company’s fibre and copper cables at the roadside along Jalan Sherip Masahor around 6.30pm on May 25.
According to the case facts, the complainant – a Telekom assistant technical officer – found that the fibre cable and the underground cable had been cut by two individuals.
Their actions had caused the network in the area to experience disruption.
The complainant managed to record a video of the two individuals before making a police report for further action. The losses incurred is around RM5,000.
Investigation found that Hairman and an accomplice committed mischief by damaging the company’s property.
ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case while the man was unrepresented by counsel.
