KUCHING: Sarawakians have been urged to remember and appreciate the struggles of past leaders who fought for independence and subsequently formed the Federation of Malaysia.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan highlighted the significant sacrifices of these leaders, emphasizing that their efforts liberated the people from the yoke of colonisation.

Moreover, he noted that these leaders played a crucial role in establishing a sovereign, independent nation where unity thrives. In his National Day address on Friday (Aug 30), he stressed the importance of this year’s theme, ‘Jiwa Merdeka’, and expressed his hope that people grasp the historic significance of the day.

Awang Tengah also encouraged the populace to break free from mental colonisation and strive for continuous success, resisting external influences that could disrupt the political stability enjoyed in Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of patriotism, urging the people of Sarawak to collaborate in shaping a brighter future for both Sarawak and Malaysia.
