SIBU: A fire broke out early this morning, severely damaging two blocks of double-storey terraced houses on Jalan Layang Layang.

Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie said the department received an emergency call at 6.24 am. Firefighters from Sibu Sentral, supported by the Sungai Merah team, were quickly dispatched to the scene.

“The fire involved a semi-detached block of double-storey terraced houses that had been converted into rental rooms.

“Block A had 18 rooms, and Block B had 18 rooms, with 80 per cent of both blocks destroyed,” he said.

Despite the extensive damage, Alie confirmed that four rooms in Block A and five rooms in Block B were saved. All 28 residents escaped safely without injuries.

The fire was brought under control, and the operation was officially concluded at 8.28 am. Investigations into the cause of the fire and the total damages are ongoing.
