SARIKEI: Malaysians are being urged to embrace their role as agents of national unity and to spread the spirit of togetherness during these challenging times.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Sri Huang Tiong Sii stressed the critical need to preserve unity as Malaysia navigates its diverse racial, religious, and cultural landscape, while progressing toward a more advanced and complex future.
“Unity is our greatest strength, and we must protect it for future generations. The diversity of races, languages, and traditions, especially in Sarawak, has been a key element in fostering harmony within our community,” he said.
In conjunction with Malaysia Day on Sept16, Huang urged all citizens to actively promote patriotism by raising and decorating their homes with the Jalur Gemilang, the national flag.
“I encourage everyone to unite in patriotism by displaying the Jalur Gemilang across offices, shops, schools, longhouses, and other public spaces. The flag symbolises our free and independent spirit, which we must continue to cherish,” he added.
Huang, who is also the Member of Parliament for Sarikei, was represented by Sarikei Resident Micheal Ronnie Langgong at the official launch of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2024 event, held today at the Indoor Stadium of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kwang Chien.
The event saw students of various ethnicities, with a majority being Chinese, showcasing cultural performances, including dances, to mark the occasion.
Huang, who also serves as the Repok assemblyman, expressed his delight at the students’ participation.
He noted that the involvement of the Chinese community demonstrated their commitment to patriotic causes.
“I am thrilled to witness students of all backgrounds — Chinese, Malay, Melanau, Iban, and others — come together to celebrate the KMJG convoy during National Month. This is truly an example of ‘Unity in Diversity’,” he said.
Huang also expressed his hope that the Malaysian Information Department (JaPen) would continue fostering patriotism through similar initiatives, ensuring Malaysians remain engaged and proud, even in the digital age.
“Let us continue to strengthen our national identity, loyalty, and patriotism, for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said.
