MIRI: Taman Bulatan Miri, a recreational park in the city, has been upgraded with the addition of a new skate park, thanks to the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative of Shinyang Group of Companies.
The new features were officially handed over to the Miri City Council (MCC) on Saturday by Shinyang’s CEO, Datuk James Ling.
“Today is a historic day for Miri, especially for our community,” said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, who was present at the ceremony.
“The improvements to Taman Bulatan, including the skate park, represent much more than just added features—they symbolise progress for the whole city,” he said.
Ting also gave updates on further plans for the park.
“The Pump Track is coming soon. We aim to complete it by the end of this year, or at the latest, early 2025, with RM600,000 allocated from government funding. These improvements will undoubtedly attract more tourists to Miri, particularly from neighbouring Brunei.”
He highlighted the significance of this, noting that Miri welcomed 1.3 million tourists from Brunei last year and is expecting an even greater influx this year.
“As Deputy Minister of Tourism, I am confident that these new additions to Taman Bulatan will help boost tourism further,” he said.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii, who also attended the handover, praised Shinyang Group’s contribution, emphasising the park’s transformation.
“The CSR project has truly elevated Taman Bulatan. The jogging track, which was previously 0.8 kilometers, has now been extended to 2.5 kilometers, making it the longest public jogging track in Sarawak, if not on the island of Borneo.”
Yii added that the scale of this CSR project is something Miri has not witnessed in years, further solidifying Taman Bulatan’s position as a key recreational space in the city.
The handover ceremony was also attended by Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad, Miri City Secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek, and other officials.
