KUCHING: Sarawak has called for global cooperation to tackle climate change as the world is approaching a critical threshold in rising temperatures.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature rise is a crucial benchmark for many climate-related impacts.
According to the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, even a small increase in global temperatures will intensify weather extremes, including heatwaves and heavy rainfall.
“If temperatures reach 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, it will become a major problem for the whole world.
“Should the temperature reach the benchmark, we would not be able to predict the climate anymore. Even the monsoon season no longer follows its usual pattern.
“Right now, the temperature stands at 1.46 degrees Celsius, just 0.04 degrees away. Hence, every country must play their part to address this,” he said during the closing ceremony of the 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival at Kuching Waterfront last night (Sept 15).
To mitigate climate change, Abang Johari shared that Sarawak is transitioning to hydrogen-powered public transport to reduce carbon emissions.
He pointed out that the state is producing hydrogen locally and collaborating with China on green energy technologies as part of its commitment to green energy.
In addition, he urged all members of the society, regardless of background or religious faith, to work together for the collective good.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Malaysia Federation of Chinese Associations president Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Goh Tian Chuan, and Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat.
