MIRI: Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has called for practical and vandalism-resistant designs for outdoor recreational parks, saying such facilities benefit the community while avoiding the risk of theft or vandalism.

The RM100,000 park, which was completed on Sept  4, took two months to build.

However, despite its recent completion, Lee expressed dissatisfaction with several aspects of the park’s design.

“Some of the facilities provided here are not practical,” he said, pointing to a plastic dustbin that he said could easily be stolen or damaged.

He stressed that future designs should prioritise durability and practicality.

“The contractor has done the job, but certain items like this dustbin can easily go missing or be stolen. I suggest that the local community (JKKK) secure these items in storage and take them out only when needed,” Lee, who is Senadin assemblyman, said in his remarks during his site visit to the newly completed Tudan Phase 3 Recreational Park on Tuesday.

Lee also urged local councils to be more mindful when designing public park facilities.

“They must think about vandalism and theft. While the park looks nice, the materials used must be strong and secure. For example, swings should be made of materials like stainless steel to ensure safety and longevity.”

Highlighting safety concerns, Lee pointed out that swings in the park were fastened with nuts and screws, which could rust and break over time.

He reminded designers that both children and their parents often use these facilities together, meaning the equipment must cater to heavier weights.

“When children play here, their parents usually accompany them, so the swings need to support not just children but adults as well. The safety of users is paramount, and the equipment should be designed with lasting durability in mind.”

Lee urged the public to help maintain the park, urging nearby residents to report any suspicious activities.

“This park is for the community. Please take care of it and report any vandalism to the authorities,” he said.
