KUCHING: A drug addict was sentenced to five years and 11 months in prison, and ordered to be given two strokes of the cane, by the Sessions Court here today (Sep 17).

Haslan Mahmudi pleaded guilty before Judge Iris Awen Jon to repeatedly abusing drugs.

According to the charge, he had two previous records dated November 16 and July 29, 2023, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He was accused of consuming prohibited drugs, specifically methamphetamine and amphetamine, when detained by the Kuching District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) at around 12:35 p.m. on February 20, 2023.

The case was prosecuted under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which
provides for a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than seven years, and three strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Additionally, the court ordered the accused to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving his prison sentence.
