BINTULU: Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, emphasised that the issue concerning ‘Abang Bas’ that has gone viral on social media falls under the ministry’s responsibility in ensuring the welfare of children.

She acknowledged public criticisms regarding the attention given to this issue but insisted that the law mandates them to act.

In fact, she noted that many have questioned why there is so much focus on the Abang Bas issue while ignoring concerns regarding Global Ikhwan Service and Business Holding (GISB).

“The issue has attracted a lot of attention, and as guardians or protectors, we cannot remain silent. We have reported it to the police for further action,” she stated.

“I have been informed that some parties intend to take legal action against several individuals, including myself. That is up to them, as it is their right.

“At the very least, we want you all to know that we have fulfilled our responsibilities and taken appropriate action under the Child Act 2001,” she said.

She said this during a press conference after witnessing the signing ceremony of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the establishment of Anjung Kasih of the National Welfare Foundation at Bintulu Hospital on Thursday.

Responding to the possibility of legal action against herself, Nancy stated that it is an individual’s right.

According to her, the authority to investigate lies entirely with the police.

“We have officers empowered under the Child Act to protect children. The investigation process is the police’s responsibility, and we cannot share further information as it may interfere with their process,” she added.

Nancy also urged the community to understand their roles in safeguarding and assisting children in need of protection.

“We are here to ensure their safety,” she added.

Last September 5, a social media user on X shared a screenshot of a TikTok post by a school bus driver referring to a female student as ‘crush’ and ‘darling.’

In response, Nancy directed the officers of the Department of Child Development (JPKK) to file a police report against the bus driver.
