KOTA SAMARAHAN: Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chew Yew has observed a significant increase in art exhibitions in recent years, reflecting a growing cultural sophistication in Sarawak.

“I have been to a couple of art exhibitions, and it is wonderful to see such wonderful art by the talented Sarawakians being displayed.

“The increasing appreciation of art, coupled with the creation of new works by talented Sarawakians is shaping a vibrant artistic landscape,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the grand opening ceremony of David Chew’s second solo art show at Hoan Gallery, La Promenade here, last night (Sept 20).

He noted that the art scene, which has historical roots dating back to the Brooke dynasty, is now flourishing with the contributions of Sarawakian artists.

“I firmly believe that the day will come when our galleries achieve international recognition, and our art museums become renowned across the region.

“But for this dream to be realised, we need our artists. While we can build galleries and museums, it is the work of our artists that will fill these spaces with life, meaning and beauty,” he added.

Additionally, Ting commended Chew for his dedication to his craft, as showcased in the exhibition. Chew’s second solo show, following his first in 2014, highlights over 40 innovative and thought-provoking paintings, all available for purchase.

“Many of us now are fortunate to witness his artistic journey, surrounded by the creativity and thoughtfulness he has poured into his work.

“I look forward to experiencing the interactive elements of these exhibitions. I will write letters and listen to the audio pieces that accompany your works, and I encourage everyone to immerse themselves in this experience as well,” he added.
