KUCHING: SEDC Nutreco Sdn Bhd, Entomal Borneo Sdn Bhd, and Natpro Biotech Sdn Bhd have joined forces to launch a state-of-the-art black soldier fly (BSF) production facility.

The venture will focus on producing BSF larvae, which are highly valued for their potential in poultry and aquafeed.

“Rich in protein and essential nutrients, these larvae offer a sustainable alternative to commonly imported feed components like fishmeal and soy, which have significant environmental impacts,” said the partners said in a joint statement.

By incorporating BSF larvae into feed, the project aims to reduce reliance on traditional feed sources, lowering the carbon footprint and promoting more sustainable farming practices.

This initiative aligns with Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS-2030) and supports environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, particularly in reducing environmental impact and enhancing food security.

The signing ceremony, held on Sept 5, was attended by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) General Manager and SEDC Nutreco director Datuk Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir, Entomal Borneo CEO Vic Pui Wee Kong, and Natpro Biotech managing director Syed Ahmad Tarmizi Wan Yusop.

Apart from feed production, the project will also produce BSF larvae frass, a valuable byproduct that serves as a potent organic fertiliser.

This frass is known for improving soil quality and promoting plant growth, providing an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fertilisers and further contributing to sustainable agriculture.
