KUCHING: The Olive Run 2024 made a vibrant return, showcasing athleticism and community spirit as over 250 participants embraced the joy of running and fellowship.
Among them was 60-year-old Teng Swee Hock, who effortlessly completed the 2-kilometre course in just 10 minutes, maintaining an impressive average pace of 6 km/h.
“At 60, I try to keep my fitness up. I run five kilometres every day, so 2 kilometres feels very relaxed. I enjoy running, and that’s why I keep at it,” he said, sharing his enthusiasm with Sarawak Tribune on Saturday.
Proudly representing the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Olive Garden, Teng participated alongside his wife, Jenny Arew Lenchau, 54.
“I’m from West Malaysia, but I’ve worked here for 35 years. My family is here, and my children grew up here,” he said, reflecting on his journey.
Before retiring, Teng was a teacher, and now running has become his favourite pastime, allowing him to fully enjoy life post-retirement.
Also joining the fun was 65-year-old pensioner Jeofery Pawi, who participated with his entire family.
“I feel very glad and happy; I even got a medal! I’m just doing this for fun, but also to foster fellowship—that’s the aim,” he said, beaming with pride.Jeofery highlighted the joy of being able to run alongside his six children and their partners.
“I didn’t train for this—I haven’t done so in quite a while—but being with my family and the church community makes it all worthwhile,” he said.
For the record, Olive Run 2024, themed “Blessed to Be a Blessing,” celebrated the BEM Olive Garden church’s 30th anniversary and featured three categories – 5 km (open to men and women), 2 km (for children under 12), and 2 km (for ages 60 and above).
Present at the event was also Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap who presented medals to the winners.
