SIBU: It was a busy day for both Sibu Central and Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) stations as they responded to two separate fire incidents here on Saturday.

Firefighters from Sungai Merah received an emergency call at 12.34 pm about a fire at a birdhouse in Rantau Panjang.

Upon arrival, located 17 kilometres away, they found that a grass fire had spread to the birdhouse, which measured 60 by 20 feet.

“The situation was brought under control by 12.58 pm, and the operation was fully completed by 2.08 pm,” said Bomba spokesperson in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Sibu Central firefighters responded to another fire, receiving a call at 1.20 pm regarding a storage facility for 50kg LPG gas cylinders belonging to a well-known hotel here.

Upon arrival, they discovered that about one per cent of the facility, approximately 15 by 6 feet, was burning.

“As of now, 16 gas cylinders have been confirmed burned, and we are still in the process of verifying the total number affected,” the statement said.

The fire was brought under control by 1.45 pm, and efforts to fully extinguish any remaining flames were ongoing at press time.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.

The causes of both fires are still under investigation.
