GEDONG: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been invited to deliver a talk on environmental management in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan.

He said that the state has continued to gain global attention for its focus on combating climate change through sustainable energy development.

“Two weeks ago, I was in Singapore, and now Azerbaijan has requested me to share my views on environmental management,” he said.

He said this during the Gedong-level Maulidur Rasul Parade and Gedong-level Maulidur Rasul Celebration at the Datuk Patinggi Ali Gedong Hall here on Sunday (Sept 22).

It was previously reported that the Premier and a Sarawak delegation has received an invitation to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, scheduled to take place in November.

Abang Johari, who is also Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister reflected on the birth of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his responsibility to advance the community while maintaining a balance with the environment.

“Our Prophet Muhammad is trustworthy because of his high integrity. Secondly, he was a responsible person dedicated to advancing his community.

“Thirdly, he managed the world with an approach called balance, taking into account human needs while being mindful of the surrounding environment. This concept in Arabic is referred to as ‘Muqarabah’,” he said.

He went on to say that if there is poor management of the environment, it would directly impact human life, leading to polluted air and increased health issues.

“We can see the effects of this today with unpredictable weather patterns and the recent typhoons in the Philippines, Taiwan, China and Vietnam,” he said.

He said this was likely due to the way humans are managing the planet.

“Hence, in Sarawak, we aim to manage our state while being mindful of the environment,” he said.

Abang Johari, who is also Gedong assemblyman, said that the state is putting efforts to develop clean energy solutions such as hydrogen.

“From a scientific perspective, hydrogen is the cleanest form of energy, and God has provided us with water resources – lakes and rainwater, which with modern technology, we can use to generate hydrogen energy,” he said.

Earlier, the Premier joined 19 contingents from various villages in Gedong for a one-kilometre march during the Gedong-level Maulidur Rasul Parade, which began at 8am.
