KUCHING: Pending assemblyman Violet Yong has been criticised for suggesting that hydrogen buses produced in Sarawak are not disability-friendly, despite their intended use for tourism and transportation.

Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that the Rapid KL buses used for the Para (SUKMA) Malaysia Games are specifically designed to accommodate athletes with disabilities.

“The Rapid KL buses have spacious front and back sections, as well as a ramp to facilitate wheelchair users. They are truly friendly to people with disabilities and suitable for this purpose,” Fatimah said at the launch of the Para (SUKMA) Malaysia Games Carnival at Dataran Perayaan today (Sept 22).

Yong’s statement, posted on Facebook, sparked a response from Fatimah, who expressed disappointment that such an issue was being raised.

“This should not be made an issue,” Fatimah said.

“She (Yong) should be supporting the athletes so they can perform their best at this event.”
