TANJUNG MANIS: The comprehensive development project implemented by the Sarawak government is a key factor in attracting tourists to Belawai Beach.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has played a significant role in the developing Belawai Beach since his tenure as Sarawak’s Minister of Housing.
He frequently attended each edition of the Belawai Festival and has even given Belawai Beach the nickname ‘Belawai Beach,’ likening it to Hawaii.
“The highlight of this development is the approval of a RM161 million project for the comprehensive development of Belawai Beach, which is expected to be completed in the next three to four years,” he said in his speech at the opening of the 2024 Belawai Festival here yesterday (Sept 22).
Len, who is the Kuala Rajang assemblyman, highlighted the success of several ancillary projects, such as the artificial reef deployment in 2018, which has greatly benefited local fishermen.
“Now, species of fish that were once rarely seen, such as the ‘terubok’, have returned to inhabit the area.
“Abang Johari has also approved the expansion of Tanjung Manis Airport, the construction of a three-star hotel, as well as a golf course, making Tanjung Manis a major attraction for visitors from within and outside the state,” he added.
Len said that with the completion of the Batang Rajang Bridge in Sarikei Division in March next year, the journey from Sarikei to Tanjung Manis will only take about 40 minutes.
“Therefore, the 2024 Belawai Festival, which began on Sept 20, will offer a variety of exciting activities that can attract visitors, not only from Tanjung Manis but also from outside areas,” he said.
Len urged all parties to continue supporting and cooperating in ensuring the success of the ongoing and upcoming development projects as they bring significant benefits to the people.
The Belawai Festival is held as an initiative to promote Belawai Beach as a tourist destination while helping local entrepreneurs market their products, thus boosting the local economy.
Also present at the event were Tanjung Manis MP Yusuf Abdul Wahab, Mukah Division Resident Kueh Ley Poh, and acting Tanjung Manis District Officer Ismail Kasah.
