MIRI: Sarawak is set to transform its northern region, encompassing Limbang, Lawas and Miri, into a significant rice cultivation area using modern agricultural technologies.
The initiative aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision to boost food security and is expected to contribute towards meeting the state’s target of producing 240,000 tonnes of paddy by 2030.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced that the state government, in collaboration with the federal government, has earmarked RM500 million in the upcoming budget for this transformation.
“We plan to focus on developing the northern region, particularly Limbang, Lawas, and Miri, as major rice-producing areas,” said Abang Johari during the Rakyat Madani Sarawakku Sayang programme held in Miri on Saturday.
He emphasized that the allocation would be directed towards modernising rice cultivation techniques and developing essential infrastructure, such as water systems, to support the agriculture sector.In
addition to the northern region, the southern part of Sarawak, including Kuching and Samarahan, will also see development efforts aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity.
The Premier expressed hope that with modern technology and adequate resources, Sarawak could enhance its rice output, ultimately bolstering the state’s food security.
“We aim to rid ourselves of food supply concerns, ensuring Sarawak’s self-sufficiency in rice production. By 2030, we are targeting the production of 240,000 tonnes of paddy, with cooperation from both federal and state governments,” he added.
The programme was officiated by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim, who underscored the federal government’s commitment to working closely with Sarawak to achieve its agricultural ambitions.
This initiative is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to strengthen its agricultural sector and ensure long-term food security for its people.
Also present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and other federal and state cabinet members.
