MIRI: The ongoing construction of the Coastal Road Northern Development Territory will strengthen Sarawak’s relationship with Brunei, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He noted that the road project, which stretches from Miri through Brunei to Limbang and Lawas, will foster closer ties and enhance connectivity between the two nations.
Speaking at a state banquet here last night (Sept 28), Abang Johari stressed Sarawak’s commitment to continuing this important infrastructure project, initially outlined during the previous federal administration.
“The plan to extend the road from Miri, through Brunei Darussalam, to Limbang and Lawas was previously introduced but left uncompleted during the 22-month in the previous federal administration,” said Abang Johari.
“Sarawak took over and is implementing the project to ensure that we maintain the good relationship between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam,” he added.
The Coastal Road Northern Development Territory is a state-funded project, with an estimated cost of RM6.1 billion. It will feature a four-lane road connecting Miri, Limbang, and Lawas, while also linking to Brunei’s highway. The project is expected to be completed by 2030, providing enhanced connectivity for both local and international travellers.
Also present at the dinner was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Alongside this road project, we will also be constructing a new power plant in Miri, which will generate an additional 500 megawatts of electricity,” said Abang Johari.
He added that the state-funded power plant is part of Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to improve the infrastructure and energy capacity in the northern region.
The Premier assured that Sarawak’s government remains committed to working in collaboration with the federal government.
“We must work together to provide the best service to our communities in northern Sarawak,” he said.
He explained Baram region, located in northern Sarawak, will be connected not only by road but also by improved water and electricity services, which will further facilitate the region’s development and strengthen its links with Brunei.
