KAPIT: Four personnel from the Malaysia People’s Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) Community Patrol are recognised for their heroic actions during a shop house fire in Julau.

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail presented certificates of appreciation to the RELA members during a working visit to the district.

The recognition was awarded for their swift response and bravery in rescuing an elderly trapped in the fire on the night of Sept 11.

In a statement today (Sept 29), the RELA members were conducting a security patrol when they witnessed the fire.

They immediately took action to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading.

“The RELA personnel broke through a locked gate and rescued Chieng Ung Huong, a 72-year-old man trapped on the upper floor of the shop house,” it said.

With the assistance of the Julau District Volunteer Firefighters and civilians, the fire was successfully contained and eventually extinguished by the Bintangor Fire Department at 8.33 pm.
