MULU: Over 70 participants from around the world have gathered at Mulu National Park for the 2024 International Showcave Association (ISCA) conference.
The conference, taking place from Sept 30 to Oct 2, serves as a platform for participants to exchange ideas, explore the latest trends in showcave management, and discuss sustainable tourism practices.
The event offers a unique opportunity for global networking, knowledge sharing, and fostering international collaboration in the showcave industry.
The International Show Caves Association (ISCA) was founded in Genga, Italy, in November 1990, with the goal of promoting the development, conservation, and protection of showcaves worldwide.
Show caves, which are underground caves developed for public viewing and education, offer visitors a rare chance to experience the subterranean world’s natural beauty and wonder.
Since its inception, ISCA has grown to include members from over 30 countries, representing some of the world’s most famous and highly visited showcaves.
The organisation provides a forum for members to exchange knowledge, experiences, and best practices, while promoting the responsible management and sustainable development of these unique sites.
Participants at the Mulu conference come from a diverse array of countries, including Germany, Australia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, South Africa, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mulu National Park manager Hein Gertsner encouraged participants to make the most of the opportunity to network and build connections during the event.
“This conference is not only a gathering of industry experts, but also an opportunity to build lasting relationships that will help foster innovation and collaboration in the showcave sector,” he said during the ice-breaking and briefing session today (Sept 29).
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is also the Mulu assemblyman, will officiate the opening ceremony of the conference tomorrow (Sept 30).
