KUCHING: The First Malaysian Infantry Division (1 Division), foiled a smuggling attempt near the Postal Sector Gabma Biawak during Operation Awas/Keris Parang on Sept 30.

The incident took place approximately 200m from the Malaysia-Indonesia border, in an area known for illegal crossings.

Around 6 pm, a joint patrol involving Malaysian army (TDM) personnel and members of the Indonesian National Army (TNI-AD) launched Ops Serkap operation at KTJ Gamba Biawak.

During routine surveillance, the patrol team discovered a suspicious pile of goods hidden under a blue canvas near an abandoned house.

Upon inspection, the team uncovered 170 packets of cooking oil, 120 packets of sugar, and 10 packets of local rice.

Investigations confirmed that no dangerous or prohibited items were found. The estimated value of the seized goods is RM1,201.00.

A police report was lodged at the Lundu police station, and the confiscated items were handed over to the Lundu customs station for further action.

Commander of the 1st Division Major General Datuk Mohamed Fauzi Kamis priased the personnel involved for their swift action and commitment to securing the border.

“The army remains resolute in its efforts to bolster border security along the Malaysia-Indonesia border to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty against illegal immigration, smuggling, and other cross-border criminal activities,” he said.

The operation was part of the ongoing efforts to curb smuggling and enhance the overall security of the region.
