Mother killed, son injured in two-vehicle collision

SIMUNJAN: A mother died on the spot while her son sustained injuries following a two-vehicle collision along Jalan Gedong-Simunjan yesterday (Oct 2).

The accident, which happened at around 3 pm, involved a Proton Saga, carrying the victims, and a Nissan Vanette parked by the roadside.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Simunjan station were dispatched to the scene, about 18km away, after receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, the team found a female passenger trapped in the front seat of the Proton Saga, and extrication works were conducted to remove her from the wreckage.

However, the victim, identified as 56-year-old Irim Gintang, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and her body was handed over to the police for transport to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the victim’s son, who was driving the Proton Saga, had already been rescued by passers-by before the team arrived.

He was later taken to the hospital for further treatment. The extent of his injuries remained unknown.

The team also carried out flushing operations to clear the debris from the road. Once the situation was deemed safe, the operation ended at 4.07 pm.
